the soft bulletin

Ran across a few interesting stories today:

- A heart patient who had recovered from a quadruple-bypass surgery died last week on the car ride back home after completing a 2,400 mile cross-country bike trip. All I can say is wow, that sucks.

- The other other Bush, Jeb, decided Florida should track all sex offenders via GPS for the rest of their lives. What a genius. So when someone gets abducted and killed, we can now go back and look at the data and see who was in the area when it happened, and go arrest them. As long as we catch them, who cares, right? Just let kids be our bait and if they bite, we know they're not "reformed".

-Mo money, mo fat? Apparently. A new study shows that obesity is growing fastest among Americans making more than $60,000 a year. Guess that extra money means more Twinkies. Why don't they just get liposuction?

the sex offenders article is pretty interesting. but what if we combine the obesity and the GPS thing, and put GPS devices on people with a BMI over 50 and hook it up to the internet so you can go see them hanging out somewhere eating fries.

How does GPS tracking sex offenders "offer up children as bait"?

Couldn't you use the data these things provide to see if they are hanging out in front of a school everyday at 3:00?

Given the large number of "sex offenders", there is no way to monitor all of these people and their activities efficiently. There are so many schools, day cares, playgrounds, etc, that it would be nearly impossible to monitor this sort of thing in a meaningful way. And given that we feel these people need monitoring, we obviously do not believe that they are "reformed", yet we still release them into the general public. So basically, children are serving as bait, and if we see these offenders strike again, we lock them back up. I see this monitoring as a reactive activity, and not a proactive activity.

But what if we put some GPS traking in children too.. The sex offenders could have red blips and the kids green... if a red blip gets too close to a green blip sound the alarm!!! I mean what harm could there be in putting gps chips in kids???
